To reply to Rob Parker's question, I also develop software for a living =
and the "annual subscription" is a method developers use to fund future =
work.  While I have no connection with Carl or his program, it appears =
his releases mostly add new features and functionality, not bug fixes.  =
Carl's website also states that you get free updates for a year, but =
after that you can use the last version you got "for a lifetime".

With respect, this is standard operating procedure for most commercial =
software products -- and that is what Carl's program is.
