I have participated in JOTA and Communications Badge activities for a number of
years now...
I have noticed I get more "Ooohs", "Aaahs" and interest when the Scouts see the
tubes glowing inside the rig. <g>
The modern Solid State rigs are, to them, just another facet of the consumer
electronics you see in Walmart, BestBuy, etc...
But with the older rigs it's easier to show them a lump circuit, variable cap, etc...
My fourth eldest boy has *no* interst in Ham Radio (per se) but he just drools over
the lighted display, S-meter needle moving and other stuff.
It's got the fifth one interested in studying for his Tech <g> - this from a 6th grader
that doesn't like school, studying or homework.... go figure <g>
