[Elecraft] How come, No computers

Hi

Not enough room to have a computer on the workbench. However there are =
two at the operating station a few feet away. One is networked using a =
RF network card to the main computer in my office back in the house ( I =
work at home). The other is a spare I use when in the field or at trade =
shows and a laptop is not appropriate because of the lack of ports on =
the laptops. This little CPU is only 10x7x2 inches and has all of the =
ports a large tower would have including keyboard/mouse, parallel, =
RS232, network, S-video/VGA, 2-USB2, 3-IEEE 1394 and audio ports. It =
also has a built in CD and 40Gb hard drive.=20

All of the assembly and troubleshooting as well as other projects not K2 =
related are done on the workbench. When I complete the radio I move it =
over to the desk where the computer is located so I can run Spectrogram =
to finalize the alignment. If required I could hook up the micro CPU and =
a flat panel display on the workbench or on a roll around cart if I =
needed it.

If you look closely you can see the bench has a front edge made from a =
2x4 mounted flat with a one inch by 1/2 inch channel routed into the =
2x4. This prevents small parts like screws from rolling off of the bench =
onto the floor. This is one of the most useful features of my bench. =
Another is the anodized aluminum metal yardstick screwed to the front =
edge of the bench. This yardstick is connected to ground through a 1 meg =
ohm resistor so I can ground myself when handling static sensitive =
parts. It is also handy for measuring wire lengths.

I made the bench about 22 years ago from 2x4's. The legs are 2x4's =
screwed and glued at right angles to form a L shape. These are very =
strong and cheaper than 4x4 legs. I used the same method for the top =
shelf except I used 1x2 for the legs. The top of the bench is plywood =
with Formica covering. The front edge is the 2x4 with the channel routed =
into the top about 1 inch back from the edge and a 1/2 inch radius =
routed on the top front edge. The back of the 2x4 has a dado so it can =
be mounted flush and screwed to the plywood top. The top has a furring =
strip around the sides and back raised up about 1/2 inch to prevent =
parts from rolling off of the bench. This also prevents the part storage =
bins from sliding off of the back of the bench.

Hey after looking at Bob (W1XT's) site with all the work benches am I
missing something. Is mine the only one with a computer on his bench, =
or
with a network node .... geez.
