Paul,
In your description, I think that you confused the part about cutting the
leads to about 1/2 inch, then removing the insulation to 1/8 inch (Page 9 in
my KAT2 manual).  If it is too hard to get the spacers in, you may need to
re-wind some of the toroids.  I would guess that you can sneak the
insulators under L3 and L4 as they have fewer turns and may pivot up a bit
better.

When I cut the toroid leads to the length
indicated by the instructions (a bit less than
1/8 inch so the toroid is left sitting about 1/16
inch off the board), I found that that didn't
leave me a lot of "slack" in the leads so as to
make it easy to lift the toroid up to slide the
insulator under and into the center of it.
