Hi, Martin!
One of the most enjoyable aspects of building rigs (to me anyway) is
developing test equipment and methods for running repeatable, meaningful
tests.
It's also one of the most challenging. Sometimes it's at least equal to
making DXCC in a single weekend...on 160 meters...with a mobile whip
antenna...in mid-summer <G>.
In an engineering lab, I've never been so frustrated as when I set up the
same equipment exactly the same way as I did before and got significantly
different results on a test. Sometimes it happens and for the most obscure
reasons. It's part of the challenge, especially when we're working in far
less controlled conditions in our shacks.
I think there's a very good reason why what we do is often called "radio
art" instead of "science".
I, too, would be very concerned about any rig that produced audible clicks
more than a few hundred Hz away at any signal strength up to the overload
point of the receiver.

Hello Ron, elecrafters,
i am not a technician and cannot tell whether my method of testing gives
correct results.
BUT:
Using the same method with the same rx 1 year or so ago, I checked a
FT-1000MP (which is known to be clicky) and got the same results , or even
worse. After modifying the FT-1000 as suggested by W8JI, the clicks were
gone within a few hundred hz.
I will record a new .wav-file as soon as my K2 has the mod.
