Thankfully, in any event 70 wpm is no useful speed for any contest I've =
been
in, though many operators complain they go too fast at 25 and 35.

Nor I. I got a 35 wpm certificate some years back, but, frankly, I enjoy
meeting a lot of different ops, not just working the same high speed =
guys
over and over, so I find that I often have to drop off of my bug to the
straight key for an interesting QSO. That means I'm below 18 wpm!=20

I have heard some super-fast CW on the bands and, so far, all that I've =
run
into turned out to be guys enjoying keyboard-keyboard CW. It's fun to =
read
it if possible. I can get some word strings at 60+ wpm, but it's work.=20

Some of this business about sharp rise/fall times might have to do with =
the
interfaces and software being used to read the stuff.=20

Let's not forget that waveform shaping can happen anywhere in the =
system,
even at the receiving end where keying can be made very soft by a narrow
filter or made sharp and "clicky" added by clipping, either =
intentionally or
unintentionally by an overloaded stage.=20
