[Elecraft] Ordering from the UK?

I think it must be down to luck sometimes. I'm not sure whether the Customs
& Excise assess parcels themselves, or whether it is down to the carrier to
do it, but all it takes is someone who isn't entirely sure what they are
doing and perhaps they will charge the duty, 'just in case'.

I used the post office service for my recent K1 purchase, and Parcel Force
charged VAT and the 8 handling fee (which is why I think they process the
tax on behalf of C&E). I didn't get charged import duty.

I ordered a K2 last night (at $1.90 to the pound it is even more of a
bargain than usual...perhaps I should have ordered two...) so we'll see
whether Parcel Force get it right again.

Frank

Your email touched a nerve with me.

I ordered my K2 on the 19th Jan, received on the 29th Jan. Before Parcel
Force would deliver I had to pay Customs Duty, VAT and the Parcel Force fee.

Reading a review in Rad-Com from earlier last year, the writer said that he
had been charged the Customs Duty, but had managed to claim it back.

Has anyone else in the UK had to pay Customs duty, if not what was the
description for the customs declaration and have you managed to reclaim it.
In my case it was 18 GBP.

I must add that the service from the US Mail and Parcel Force was excellent,
you can monitor where the parcel is, if you know the parcel number, from the
Parcel Force web site.

Thanks

Michael and Kevin,
Thanks for the quick replies, I'd done a bit of research via google and
different reflectors, it seems that in the past there were some problems
importing stuff into the UK with some people having to pay VAT, customs
and a handling charge! Thankfully that seems to be a thing of the past.
I'm waiting for my brother (Gi7JLD) to arrive with his credit card so I
can order. I wonder will there be a problem with the mailing address
being different to that of the card holder? I'll really have to get
myself a card someday... :-)
