Don't feel too bad - you are not alone.
Soldering problems are right up there with poorly tinned toroid leads as a
primary cause of failure.

In the event of a problem, check soldering, then check soldering and finally
check soldering.  Yes, even on rigs that have worked 'properly' for a while.

Glad you found it with little struggle.
