[Elecraft] A little more =-"ooomph"

Hi

Just because you have the KPA100 does not mean the K2 will not do QRP as =
well as a barefoot K2. In fact if you connect up the power supply to the =
normal barrel connector and the firmware will turn off the KPA100 and =
the K2 will work exactly like a basic K2. If you connect up the power =
supply to the KPA100 then the firmware will switch in the power =
amplifier and the KPA100 will power the K2. But even in this mode the =
normal K2 output is connected to the antenna when you set the power =
below 11 watts and it is possible to disable the KPA100 in the menu if =
you like. Above 10 watts the KPA100 is switched in and will go up to =
over 100 watts on all bands.=20

The KPA100 is so well designed and integrated into the K2 that I would =
recommend you go that way. You can always run it at 25 or so watts if =
that's all you need. You also get the computer interface, the external =
power amp keying circuit and a true power meter/SWR meter built in an no =
extra charge and it all fits inside the K2 case so you do not need to =
haul around another box with the amp in it or a SWR meter. The only down =
side is the K2/100 is a little heavier but if that is concern then just =
swap out the tops. It takes about 5 minutes. Besides it is an excuse to =
build another Elecraft kit.

  Hi Gang,
My Elecraft K2 is capable of about 10 watts on most bands, bust =
rarely
going above 5 watts on CW.

I've been thinking about building a small RF amplifier - probably in =
the
neighborhood of 25 watts or so, just to have in case I'm have a bit of
trouble being heard. (Actually, what I really need is a more efficient
antenna, but that's a project for another day!)

I'm not inclined to go with the 100 watt K2 at this point in time, as =
I
really do work qrp 99% of the time. I was hoping that someone might =
point
me in the direction of a solution.

  Thanks
  Tom WB2QDG
