I agree wholeheartedly. Most times, I pull the part off of the board
(cutting leads if it isn't easy to remove otherwise). Then I put the
soldapullt pump against the pad on one side of the board, touch the iron to
the pad on the other side until I see the solder melt, press the trigger and
"Whack!" there's a factory-fresh clean pad ready for the new part in an
instant.
