[Elecraft] KX-1 Crackling Noise Problem on RCV - Looking for suggestions

Hi,

I recently finished building my KX-1, and have made several dozen really fun
contacts with it, but there is a minor problem that I would like to fix, but
have yet to solve.

There is an underlying crackling noise in the receiver.  It is not very
noticeable when bands are open, but apparent and a nuisance when conditions
are quiet.

So far I have done the following:

Checked the voltage regulators for oscillation - none.
Attached 0.1 microFarad caps to the output side of the voltage regulators.
Changed out the LM386 output amp.
Checked and resoldered the ground leads on the XTAL cans.

The crackling noise persists even when the antenna is removed and the radio
is on internal batteries only.

I have also searched the Elecraft e-mail archives for similar problems, but
their fixes are not taking care of this one.

Any suggestions??
