Okay, so the "clicks" from an "original" un-modified K2 producing an S-9 or
so signal at a receiver would, typically, be at a level of about S2 or S1
between 500 Hz and 1 kHz away.
That's assuming each S-unit at 6 dB. I haven't checked the K2 myself, but
Eric mentioned that many Ham receiver use something around 3.3 dB/S-unit
which would put the clicks down below "S-zero" again <G>.
I was having a hard time imagining the receiver avoiding overloading if
someone was trying to listen to a signal less than 1 KHz away that was
putting 1/2 volt or more of RF on the antenna terminals!
This fits much better with the descriptions we've heard from ops in
practice. They seem to be audible if the band is very quiet AND the op is
trying to hear a signal way down hear the noise level only a few hundred Hz
from a K2 signal that is well over S9.
