Andy, figure 3-3 on page 9 is an accurate description of the placement of J1
as is fig 5-7, it goes on the underside of the front panel board, the side
opposite the switches etc. This connector mates with its companion connector
(RF board P1) which is  mounted on the underside of the rf board. When
everything is mated up, J1 will slip just under the control board and mate
with its companion connector.
