[Elecraft] UK Customs Duty.

Hi All,

The good news here is my K2 #4168 finally arrived by camel train today after 
a five week wait from the order confirmation. Guess the demand for the K2 kit 
is outstripping supply at present which must bring joy to Elecraft.

The bad news is that I took a hammering with UK Customs in the process. I had 
the option of paying the UK Customs about $277 up front or try and negotiate 
a better deal if there was an objection. With the Easter holiday starting in 
the UK Thursday evening and running through until Tuesday morning next week the 
latter was not a good option. Understand the UK import duty should not have 
levied, though am liable for VAT (UK sales tax @ 17.5%). The process of trying 
to recover the import duty and the VAT element of that from UK Customs will go 
into gear after the holidays.

Can any UK subscribers to the Elecraft mailing list who have personally gone 
down this road give me pointers on what to do. What is the UK Customs 
commodity code for items similar to the K2 kit and what are the rules applicable to 
the K2 kit as regards liability or exemption from UK import duty?
