[Elecraft] soldering tip temperature sensor/calibration

Hmmmm... Built a Viking Ranger transmitter using a Weller D-550 soldering
gun. 275 watts of power with the trigger full in. 

Still have the Weller 'though not the Ranger... It's great for soldering
antenna wires in a snowstorm or mounting PL-259's on RG/8 type coax or
soldering copper sheet into a chassis.

I've never worried about calibrating the tip tempurature of my soldering
station.  I figured if it melted the solder it was hot enough.  My K2/100
(and all the rest) works great and never once worried about if my tip was
hot enough.  If it was to slow, I tweaked it a little hotter.  
 
Can we look at something so close that we miss the fun of it all or am I
missing something.  
 
Hey did anyone put together a Heathkit with a Weller 140 watt gun?  I did!
It worked too.
