Mike,
Rest assured that outdoor use of the even the finest cables and connectors
and the rigors of winds, weather loading, sun, etc. can lead to failures of
the best coax and components.

An antenna needs annual maintenance.   Sometimes you will get lucky and it
will mostly work for 15 years or so, like our club's beam coax.  It was
still transmitting and receiving, but the plastic center insulation was rock
hard and cracked into little donuts.

The loose connector nut could have lead to a problem when you tightened up,
and the SWR variations seem to confirm it.
