Not to mention the need to add a capacitor to every transformer in a BPL
system to couple the BPL signals from one side of the transformer to the
other.

Subject: [Elecraft] BPL achilles heel
Hi Guys,
I have suggested that the power lines themselves are
the biggest impediment to BPL. The power companies
would need to clean up every cruddy joint and replace
every noisy transformer (that they have been ignoring
for years), all to attain dialup bandwidth. Read
this as "not cost effective". Given a perfect power
line transmission system (which will never happen),
there would be hundreds of sources of noise to disrupt
BPL from electric fences, apartment pool heater
thermostats, neon signs, you name it. I think that
hams could find an effective spoiler device in the
"dollar" range, it would certainly be an absolute
waste of good RF and and open dare to the FCC to
disrupt BPL at amateur frequencys.
