Many thanks to Tom N0SS, Don W3FPR, Dan WG4S, Greg AB7R and Ron 
ZL1TW for advice.   The counter cable was in TP1.
The VFO linearization display commences, but after less than 1 second it 
shows Info 232 so I'm guessing that the problem is an 'out-of-spec' 
component.   
I have K2 #767 opened up on the bench alongside #3725 and with an RF 
probe measured as follows :-

Reference Oscillator Output - P1, U4

#767		0.75 volts		(expect 0.8 - 1.8 volts)
#3725		0.47 	(hmmm.)		

VCO Output, Pin 3, U3

#767		0.21 volts		(expect 0.3 - 0.4 volts)
#3725		0.21

VCO Buffer Output - Pin 6, U3	(i.e. TP1)

#767		0.53 volts		(expect 0.6 - 0.75)
#3725		0.52

To complicate matters, the VCO alignment/voltage readings were within spec 
but since attempting the VFO linearization, adjusting L30 has no effect on 
VCO control voltage.    I'll drag out the oscilloscope (limited bandwidth, sigh)
and probe around Q18 and Q19.
