Thanks for the kind responses and suggestions both on and off list. 
Things look better with sleep and coffee.

It appears the screwdriver shorted aux 12v to ground and ran amazing 
amounts of current through D10 and C196. When I bypass D10 the rig 
comes back life, so I'm pretty sure I had a nice little hot dog 
cooker going there (with D10 as the dog) on the upstream side of the 
power switch.

Whew!
