Regarding the trasverter switching question:  I recently purchased a pair of 
brand new Russian REW-14 coaxial relays on e-Bay for about $45.  They are 
very rugged, and come with their own mating connectors (they're a little 
different than anything found stateside.  There's a website that shows 
pictorally, how to assemble the connectors.  The relays are 28 volt dc.

Now THAT's my idea of a peace dividend!  Good luck.
