[Elecraft] K2 Volume

It seems to me that no radio can be all things to all people.
Consider the K2 as a component of a communications system, not as the
complete system.
For example, if you operate CW, you add a paddle or key. For SSB you add a
microphone.
If you are listening in a quiet environment and don't want to wear
headphones, the top-firing speaker and internal audio amp are probably
adequate. If they are not, a cheap computer-type amplified speaker usually
will be.
Or, you can add headphones.
In a mobile environment, a small, top-firing speaker is usually not directed
at the operator and would normally provide inadequate volume. So, you add
an external speaker and, if necessary, an amplified external speaker.
Finally, it seems that there are often two separate issues generally lumped
under the category of "inadequate volume":
1) overall receiver gain, and
2) actual sound pressure from the speaker with a strong signal.
Regarding point 1, the K2 has less overall gain than many radios. This is
by design. Some people consider it marginal, and for them it is. Other are
quite satisfied and think it adequate, and for them it is.
Regarding point 2, the K2 has limited audio output capacity. The speaker
was chosen to maximize the audio output from the 1 watt audio amplifier.
Remember, this was designed as a battery-powered, portable radio (but not a
boom box). Adding an amplified speaker for those situations which require
it is just part of system design when using the K2 as a system component.
Adding such a speaker also increases the overall receiver gain, which may
help the people who are unhappy under point 1.
I strongly suspect an amplified speaker is *much* cheaper than a TS-2000.
Heck, I'd be willing to buy a used Motorola amplified speaker and clean it
up, or maybe even buy a new one, and swap it for a working TS-2000!
