1. Get a K1 and hope I can sell it on if I decide to upgrade.
W-h-a-t!? are you crazy, or sumthin'? Sell the K1!? Not on your life!
Seriously, the K1 is an excelent first-build rig. It will give you lots of
operating enjoyment even without digital capability. Additionally, as your
interests grow and you want to expand your stable of rigs, the K1 makes for
a great portable rig for your "Local Expeditions".
2. Go for a basic K2 and upgrade it as necessary.
Not a bad choice. It's a little (very little) less portable than the K1 but
capable of additional modes of operation. The build is not too bad and the
instructions (as with all of Elecrafts manuals) are easy to read. Note that
a fully optioned K1 runs about the same price as an entry K2.
3. Get a Yaesu FT-817 becuse it's got everything built in!?
Now, what would you want to do that for!? It's not nearly as much fun to
build;
1 - insert mike plug
2 - insert key
3 - connect antenna
4 - connect power
See, not as much fun!
My vote? Get the K1. Have some fun building/operating it. Start adding the
K1 options (KAT1, KBT1, KNB1). Later, buy the K2 and start enjoying the
building process all over again. Oh, and whatever you do, DON'T sell that
K1!!
Cheers,
Colin

K1 - 942
K2 - 2833
KX1 - OK, maybe soon!
