Hi Richard, I got licensed only a few months ago and fancied HF QRP CW. So
I went for a K1. Firstly it is cheaper than the K2, it's size suits the
very small space that I have for my hamming, it is CW only which forces me
to use CW and therefore get proficient at it (I'm still a novice at CW and
I think if I had SSB I would possibly take the easy way out instead of
persevering). Also it has a superb rx and I can work all bands from 80-15m.
For a complete beginner, the K1 has all the features that I need. Sure the
K2 has many more facilities and add-ons which more experienced hams
need/want but the size and simplicity of the K1(I don't mean simplicity of
circuit design) make it ideal for me. Also you can almost put it in your
pocket and take it anywhere with a few batteries.

I am fortunate to have space for a 40m dipole and the K1 has performed just
fantastic. Whichever rig you go for, take your time with it and double
check everything before you solder.

Hope the foundation goes OK for you and look forward to hearing you on the
bands.

Subject: [Elecraft] Newbie question

Hi folks

I hope I'm in the right place to ask the following questions. I'm in
the UK and am shortly hoping to take my Foundation Licence which will
allow me 10 watts on (nearly) all bands. When I have it I intend to
start my amateur career on HF using CW (Don't worry, I had 10 years in
the merchant navy as an RO so my morse is reasonable :-)) I don't have
a lot of room for big antennas. I suspect the attic will be where I'll
start. I'm not interested in SSB (at the moment) but would probably
like to try some of the data modes later on. Bearing in mind that I
want to spend my money as wisely as possible, do I:

1. Get a K1 and hope I can sell it on if I decide to upgrade.
2. Go for a basic K2 and upgrade it as necessary.
3. Get a Yaesu FT-817 becuse it's got everything built in!?

All opinions appreciated, especially from those in the UK whov'e built
a K1/K2.

TIA!

Richard
