This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending the second all squadron
WV2 (Willyvictor) reunion at Chanute Aerospace Museum in Rantoul, IL
With 300 plus in attendance (not counting wives), there were many former
radiomen there, many of them hams. I have 1300 hours flight time as
Radioman aboard the Navy's WV2 (EC121). The plane at Rantoul is a
restored WV2, Bu # 141311, static exibit. It was restored (and more work
to be done) by former crew members of that plane and others like it.
During the reunion there was a special events station aboard the aircraft
useing the long wire antenna on the aircraft. The station was WV2AEW,
very fitting call sign and the rig was a TenTec Omni VI.
BUT only one ham showed up with a rig in his car..... me. The rig was my
K2. Last friday from the parking lot I made contact with the special
events station so I could get a certificate that was offered. When I
signed the operator in the aircraft said hang loose as two hams were on
their way to the parking lot to use my K2. And the next day 5 or 6 more
made contact with the special events station. Five watts SSB for a
distance of about 150 yards, what is the miles-per-watt for that???
I was able to make several fellow hams happy and also got to show off the
K2 (powered by a ten cell double 'A' pack of NiMH cells and a "Hamstick"
type of antenna)
