[Elecraft] Contesting with a k2

Hi Tim
I'm not a heavy duty contester, but I do enjoy several of the contests with
my K2.
I do all the 160m cw contests in the winter. Just did the NAQP and the NCJ
Sprint Saturday evening. Field Day is my favorite contest of all.

From what I hear from other contesters, the K2 receiver performs well when
there is a lot
of band activity. Very few intermod problems, producing little or no
spurious signals.
I know I've never had a problem. In contesting, most seem to run their
filters wide, rather
than narrow. In the heat of competition, zero beating goes by the board and
they just try to get close enough to be the first signal you hear after a
CQ.

I'm using the KI02 digital interface with my ancient laptop, running TR Log
in DOS for a logging program. It has worked fine so far in these two
contests. I also have the KRC2 band decoder that I will be hooking up for
fast band switching of my minimal antenna farm.

All in all, I don't feel at any disadvantage using the K2, except for power.
As it is, I prefer to compete against other QRP operators, and just don't
tell the high power ops that I'm QRP :-)

Hope you enjoy your entry into contesting. It certainly keeps the little
gray cells stirred up.

Hi folks -
I'd like to hear a little feedback from those of you who may do heavy duty
contesting with a K2. I did read the contestor's article a short while back.
I am not a contestor but I am slowly getting the desire to try. The most
common observation I've heard about our K2's in casual conversation is that
no dual (as in sumultaneous like the 756ProII) receive and no manual notch
is a negative for a contest type. If you are an experienced contestor -
could you please share your own impressions of those comments? I don't see
those as the slightest problem - but maybe the contesting environment really
makes a difference?
