Everyone has his or her own best methods of accomplishing tasks, and
winding toroids is no exception... However, I think that the use of a
tapered tool of any kind inserted into the core is risky, requiring
care...I have used artist's paint brushes with unsatisfactory
results...The wedging force that such a tool can exert can easily split
the core if one is a little too heavy handed...The T80-0 phenolic cores
used for L1, L2, L3, and L4 in the KAT/100 are fragile, and heavy gage
wire is used to wind them...I would stay away from any tapered tool with
these cores...Just my opinion, others may differ...

I use a Hakko 808 to strip the toroids, but in my experience the "blob"
method is the quickest, safest, and least tedious...I used it before I
got the Hakko...You need to switch to a bigger (read hotter) soldering
iron for this task...This may leave some burnt residue on the wire which
you can scrape off with a fingernail then re-tin, but you will have to
scrape anyway if you use a blade of any kind...I have used the scraping
method, but I found it to be tedious and time consuming...Again, just my
opinion...
