At the risk of getting this thread going full tilt for the umteenth time...
I've always used John's method of scraping and tinning while building a 
K1, K2, and all the options for both.
I use a single edge razor blade.  Only thing I do different...  I angle 
the blade AWAY from the direction I'm
scraping, the theory being that it would be very difficult to knick the 
wire.  Never had a problem with any of
the dozens of toroids I've wound.
