If the wet sponge is an "inferior practice", why is it still around and
why is it still used in production shops?...The metallic tip cleaners do
their thing by scraping the crud off the tip with sharp edges...When I
was gainfully employed back in the '70's, we tried several tip cleaning
methods...They concluded that in production work, (hundreds of joints per
day) the metallic wool tip cleaners shorten tip life...The tips, or
nozzles, of the Hakko 808 are very expensive, costing more than $13
each...I will stick with my wet sponge, thank you...YMMV...

Probably helps to know what you're talking about...
The metal scrubbers I and others have been referring to contain not a
single
particle of steel, they're made of low abrasion brass.
"Time honoured" is hardly an adequate reason for continuing with an
inferior
practice.
