Good points Ron, definitely, printing has to be done efficiently for speeds
above 5.
Head copy seems to help, if you learn to copy ahead in the head, and write
behind.
Somewhere in the old ARRL Learning the Radiotelegraph Code, there is a chart
of how to print letters per the Mil code schools. That was what I tried to
learn by.
No one brought a mill to their FCC code exam in my time, but am not sure if
they allowed it or not. That would have been a distraction as our exam was
in the Post Office attic that had slanting walls and we had echoes from down
the hall. Actually the attic was one giant square donut hallway around an
air shaft of the building, or courtyard. Terrible echoes to every
character!
the mill makes things a lot easier, if you have learned to touch type.
Luckily my parents made me take typing in school, and I have never regretted
it.
Some of us never sound good on a bug either, but I have at last found a bug
that can be mastered at less than 25 wpm without extra weights on the lever.
A local makes them out of surplus brass air tubing fittings, and the dot
spring is from a defunct car radio vibrator! It was in QST last year, or
earlier this year as a photo story.
