Bill,

Thanks for your reply. Before I received it, I placed the following order=

It sounds like I guessed wrong on the 47pF caps. From the email I received,=
 it sounds like they've already mailed the order. The caps I ordered are 5%=
 NPOs, but I guess from what you say there may be some other aspect about=
 them that might be wrong. Please advise.

I'm about a third to a half way through the main board. I've completed the=
 two previous sections OK, and the partial rig at that point passed all of=
 the tests in the construction manual. I have a friend who is an engineer=
 and is going to help me with the alignment when I get to that stage --=
 assuming that he's in the country at that point. He makes frequent trips=
 to Asia.

The kit I bought way back in Dec. 02, has SSB, Serial and antenna tuner=
 modules. As I said in a previous post, I worked very hard on the kit in=
 late December and early January and am just now getting back to the fray. =
 I will certainly keep you posted and let you know if I run into any major=
 problems. I certainly don't mind your sales pitch; it's nice to know that=
 such services exist.

Thanks again for your help.

73,

Carl -- N8VZ

>=A0The 47 pF caps are also critical caps as are all the small value
>=A0capacitors in the kit. =A0They determine the shape and center
>=A0frequency of the Bandpass Filters and some other important tuned
>=A0circuits.
>
>=A0It looks like the 47 pF, 5% NPO with radial leads Mouser part
>=A0number is 581-SR151A470J . =A0Now, you may have to bend the leads
>=A0very carefully to fit the holes in the RF board depending which
>=A0capacitor you are loading, but I think I selected the lead
>=A0configuration you need, and you shouldn't have to do much bending.
>=A0The price on these is 25 cents. =A0It's high because it is a 5% NPO
>=A0part. =A0The same is true for the 270 pF number I gave.
>
>=A0Now, please don't be offended, but I am a builder on the Elecraft
>=A0list with a specialty of stepping in to help when someone finds
>=A0themselves in trouble and doesn't know where to turn.
>=A0Additionally, I adjust and align the K2 to bring them to peak
>=A0performance that adjustment without instruments can't achieve after
>=A0people have been successful in assembling their kits. =A0Should you
>=A0feel you need help either before or after completion of your K2,
>=A0please feel free to contact me for any help you may need.

>=A0Kit building should be fun, Carl. =A0The K2 is quite complex as a
>=A0kit, and may overwhelm many kit builders. =A0I have a concern that
>=A0MANY K1's and K2's have already found a box in the corner where
>=A0they will remain unbuilt because the builder became too frustrated
>=A0and gave up. =A0That's sad, for they do work, and work well, when
>=A0constructed and adjusted properly. =A0It is also a significant
>=A0investment just to let lay in the corner.
>
>=A0May I ask what options you have for your kit? =A0You probably have
>=A0already told me that somewhere, but I forgot if you did! ;-)
>
>=A0Please stay in touch and let me know how you're doing. =A0BTW where
>=A0are you in the kit building process. =A0Have you started the RF board
>=A0after having passed alignment steps 1? =A0Again, you probably told me
>=A0that, but I forgot if you did.
>
>=A0Take care, and most of all, have fun. =A0There is all the support you
>=A0need to get your kit together one way or another. =A0Again, I
>=A0apologize if this seems like a sales pitch for me services. =A0I
>=A0guess it really is for the alignment after construction is complete!
>=A0 =A0That is critical, and cannot be done as accurately and completely
>=A0without instruments.

>=A0Good luck, and please stay in touch,

>=A0P.S. =A0Make sure you complete your inventory before ordering from
>=A0Mouser. =A0I could help with that process as well if you need it;
>=A0e.g., phone numbers, etc. =A0I personally order online.

>=A0Thanks very much for the detailed reply. =A0I think I'll order a C72
>=A0replacement from Mouser tomorrow. =A0I just did a complete inventory
>=A0of all the caps, and I find I'm also missing all four of the 47pF
>=A0caps (C20, 24, 73 &=A0203). =A0If you have the Mouser number for this
>=A0cap, too, it would be appreciated, though I think this is a more
>=A0garden variety cap. =A0I don't have any in my junk box, though.
>=A0Thanks again for all your help. =A0This has been a rather frustrating
>=A0first day back in the kit building business after a several month
>=A0layoff. =A0I know I'll make better progress tomorrow, because other
>=A0than those mentioned I have all the rest of the caps and they are
>=A0now, after this evening's work, neatly placed in properly marked
>=A0envelopes sorted in a small file box. =A0 =A0If I was only so neat most
>=A0of the time, the XYL would be happy! ;-) 73,

>>=A0C72 is part of the PLL tuning circuitry and a relatively critical
>>=A0part. I suggest you either get a 270 pF NPO or COG capacitor to
>>=A0replace the missing capacitor. Elecraft may well be the best
>>=A0place to get the part depending on where you live.
>>
>>=A0Out there in Athens, though, you may have some places where you
>>=A0can buy reliable parts. If you can get a 5% 270 pF COG/NPO
>>=A0capacitor in a local parts house, go for it. It will beat the
>>=A0wait and postage for one from California. For reference, Mouser
>>=A0part # 581- SR151A271J (26 cents) would do the trick, for example.

>>=A0Progress is real slow tonight. Murphy is rearing his ugly head.
>>=A0No sooner did I get C71 figured out than I ran into a problem
>>=A0with the very next cap. I don't seem to have a cap marked 271
>>=A0anywhere. I have two caps marked 2.7c, but they don't check out
>>=A0on my good cap meter. They both check out about 14 pF or .014nF --
>>=A0 nowhere near 270pF, which is the value listed for C72. I noticed
>>=A0a thread from back in February where a guy also had this same
>>=A0dilemma. I guess I've got to ask Elecraft to send me C72.
>>=A0Thoughts?
