Hi Stewart,
"ALT" mode considers additional L and C combinations that would normally be too
high or low in reactance to be of utility on a given band. This is most likely
to be useful with antennas which are very narrow-banded and resonant on one ham
band (such as loaded whips or loops), or with antennas that are electrically
close to a multiple of a quarter wavelength.
ALT and AUTO modes share the same fine-tuning algorithm once the SWR is below
1.5:1, but ALT will take considerably longer in the coarse-tuning phase, so it
should only be used when necessary. Of course, once you've completed matching
your antennas on all bands and ANT 1 and 2, you need not re-tune, so ALT mode
may be useful initially.
