Rick,
Suggest you check the contacts of your telegraph key for oxidation.
I found that my Vibroplex Bug converted to act as a paddle were oxidized 
  enough to cause the very problem I believe from your description you 
are experiencing. You are switching a very low current circuit and any 
resistance in the key contacts could prevent your K2 from properly 
functioning. After making and breaking a few times the resistance breaks 
down and normal keying occurs. Suggest you try cleaning your key 
contacts, or try another key.
