I think David's (W1EUY) is "right on" with his advice from my experience.

I would add one bit about the ATU. The MFJ's are mostly "T-Match" circuits.
These things are very wide range and don't necessarily need an expensive
roller inductor. But there is a downside to them. The "T" circuit can be
VERY lossy at some impedance transformations. The 'give-away' to the ATU's
that are "T-matches" are that they have two capacitors and one inductor. If
you have one, try to find the matching combination that has the greatest
amount of capacitance. Matches where the caps are near minimum are the ones
most likely to show high losses. Even MFJ is quick to point this out in
their manuals.

The "L" networks used in the Elecraft ATU's are inherently more efficient
and will operate efficiently at any impedance transformation within their
range.

Of course, you can homebrew an "L" match too. All you need is a variable
coil (taps or a roller inductor) and a variable cap or, as the Elecraft
ATU's have, lots of fixed inductors and lots of fixed caps and lots of
relays or switches <G>.
