Hi Trevor,

I have a similar problem........the residual winds from hurricane Isabella
took down the one branch that was left on an already dying tree that was
supporting my 40m dipole and also supported the feed point for my horizontal
loop. I'm considering erecting a 28" telescoping fiberglass mast (a wind
banner pole found at kite shops, I got mine on ebay) which will be
positioned to replace the fallen tree branch. It will be a little "bendy"
near the top and will need to be guyed but it may do the job.

Another idea for a support mast (which I haven't tried yet) would be to dig
a hole about 2' deep, fill it with cement and place a 5' piece pipe in the
cement (with an end cap on the bottom of the pipe), leaving 3' above ground.
After the cement has cured I would then insert aluminum conduit sections (3
or 4 ten ft. sections with threaded ends joined by couplings.....or some of
those military surplus mast sections found on ebay). I think such an
arrangement would work up to at least 30'...maybe higher....and could be
placed close to the property edge without need for guying . The diameter of
the base pipe would be sized for a snug fit according to the diameter of the
mast sections and shimmed with wood wedges to keep it tight in the base
pipe. I just now dreamed this up but it sounds workable so I'll try it
myself soon and report back to the list but before I do...... has anyone
else reading the list tried anything like the above idea?
