[Elecraft] Tools and construction

Hi

I use the paint masking tape on the K2 heatsink to insulate the panel =
under L33. Remove the green ~2 inch square tape and stick it to the =
bottom cover centered about where L33 is located. I also only remove the =
masking tape on the back panel to mount the options required. This keeps =
the unused holes covered until the options are added and makes the back =
panel look better. Use a knife to score the tape and remove just the =
tape covering the needed holes.

The only place I use anything to fix a toroid is at T2. I use a small =
square of 1/16 inch double stick foam tape to mount T2 to raise it up =
off of the board a little to improve the power output on 10 meters. On =
all of the others if you pull the leads tight and bend them over on the =
back to hold the toroid tight against the board while you solder the =
leads then there will be no need to fix the wire to the toroid. Also =
some of the toroids may need the windings to be adjusted so the circuit =
will work (T5 is one) if the windings are glued down then you cannot =
adjust them.=20

I do not know of any wire stripper with enough precision to strip enamel =
magnet wire with out damaging the wire. The methods outlined in the =
manual are the best I have found. I use a modified solder blob method. I =
use my Hakko desoldering station to heat strip the leads. I insert the =
wire into the nozzle, apply some solder and after about 10 seconds pull =
the trigger. I get a clean strip and tin of the wire.

  Folks:

  SNIP

Another question I have is about the "q-dope" that is also sold by =
Morse Express. Would this be helpful in affixing the first turn of=20
wire to the core in winding toroids? Also, I recall that a few months =
ago "liquid insulation" was discussed as a neater substitute than =
electrical tape under L33. I was never able to find such a substance =
sold by any of the major suppliers. Would this "q-dope" do the job?=20

Finally, for the many months that I've read the "reflector" and the =
various methods offered to remove the enamel coating from the toroid =
wire, I've always wondered whether a "precision wire stripper" would =
accomplish this task more easily and cleaner than burning or sanding=20
it off. Marshal's stripper goes down to 30 guage.

  Tnx and 73's
