On Wednesday I'll turn 55. Soooo... the wonderful folks at Elecraft
decided that getting my K2 kit to me on time would be a great birthday
gift... not that they knew that or even care, however, the kit did
arrive today, snail mail.. now to inventory. Thank you to all the folks
at Elecraft for your incredibly fast delivery. I ordered just about all
the options you can put on a K2 except for the 100 watt amp (later) so I
expected about three or four weeks delivery time. I sent the check into
them on the 30th of Sept five days ago, and it is all here. Now that's
what I call service!
Ok, now dumb question # 1 on this oddesy: where is the serial number
for the K2, is it a tab sticker that is put on the back of the case? I
looked at the case itself and there is a spot for the #, but no number.
I took a preliminary look through the bags and didn't see a tab, similar
to the Heathkit tabs.... it really isn't important unless I have a
problem or missing parts, etc, but I was curious about this.
Tonight I have class, so tomorrow I shall begin the process of
inventory. I am taking it with me on Wednesday night class for "show &
tell" ...
Having built several Kitfox and Avid kit airplanes, I have discovered
how critical it is to first take the time to inventory all the parts.
This kit has far more parts in it than any Kitfox I ever built. At least
it seems so .... the last kit I built of this complexity was the
Heathkit GR2000 television with the on screen digital display ... the
hardest kit I ever built? The Heathkit HW-9 ... but that was in High
School many years ago and it was my first ever kit. I had only built a
crystal radio receiver prior to that. An old (old to me at the time)
Elmer by the name of Ed DePue, about 70 at the time was my mentor along
with my scoutmaster Mr. Burris. My how the time flies .... getting back
in to ham radio is like reliving your Christmas dreams (all of them) all
over again ...
Just some musings from a newbie (again) .... looking forward to getting
the rig on the air.
Since this is also doubling as a class project for my Communications
Systems class at ITT Tech where I am pursuing my Electronics Engineering
degree, I must have it completed by end of December to gain credit for
the project. The professor is very interested in the K2. Who knows,
maybe I can convince him and some of my fellow classmates to get their
licenses ....?? I am thinking of forming a student Ham Radio club on
campus, is there such a thing around the country? Wonder how one would
go about doing that? Forgive my musings folks, it's just that I am
really excited about this project. Just wanted to share some of the joy.
