That should work.  But there might be an easier way.  Each xtal you 
remove could be damaged when you do that -- so some less drastic 
approach would be preferred.

I recommend waiting until one of the gurus suggests an in situ diagnotic 
approach.

One thing you could to is take resistance and voltage measurements at 
each filter stage and see if any one is significantly different than the 
others.  Also look for solder bridges and other such problems.
