The switch on the KX1 is pretty good in that regard. The K1 switch is more
apt to get accidently turned on which is another reason why the Pelican
case is desireable. With the foam protecting everything, it's next to
impossible to turn on accidently. The KX1 switches were clearly choosen
with accidental activation in mind. There's no way those slide switches
were haphazard. It seems to me that every, and I mean every feature of the
KX1 was well thought out, debated, refined and polished.
If I had to point to only one thing that separates Elecraft from anyone
else, it's physical design. I hope that doesn't irritate Wayne or Eric or
whoever. Yes, electrically, Elecraft rigs squeeze out the most performance
possible given what they're designed to do. But what is truly miraculous
is the physical design, ergonomics, layout, and features. Especially
considering it's (almost) all pin-through-hole componentry and built by a
broad spectrum of abilities. It would be nice to have some hard data but I
suspect that every kit sold ends up successfully on the air.
I have only one complaint about Elecraft rigs and that's the thumb screws
they use on the K1 (internal battery option) and the KX1 are 3/16" too
long. I know you all think that too--go ahead--admit it. It's time to
come out of the closet and criticize Elecraft for something even if it's
sub-trivial
