<<OK, Bubble wrap + large Zip-loc bag...
I appreciate all the help and suggestions but I do this a lot--an awful
lot. Just about every weekend, I'm hiking, backpacking, canoeing or rock
climbing with a QRP rig along for the ride. I've busted up quite a few
rigs and tried a myiad of protective schemes.
So far, in my experience, a Pelican case is the only container that has
kept my rigs whole. Unfortunately, it greatly adds to bulk and weight. I'm
not gentle. I don't worry, or want to worry about any of my gear. It has
to stand up to anything I subject it to or it won't come along on the next
trip.
Bubble wrap won't keep the spout of my coffee pot from gouging the rig. It
wont keep a tent stake from creating havoc. Things shift around in a
backpack in tortuous ways. In addition, I don't enjoy chasing bits of
bubble wrap, zip-loc bags, rubberbands, etc that get blown around at the
campsite (as they say, "been there, done that--a lot"). Particularly on
exposed summits where high wind is your constant companion. You kind of
get the idea...
