[Elecraft] RE: KX1 & "lasso" antenna worked best

Wayne:

Did you close the lasso loop electrically ?

If so I wonder whether this would then become a short capacitively loaded
vertical, or what ?

If physically closed, but not electrically connected (eg the end of 28ga
enamel twisted around the wire...) then it might be approximated as a DDRR
or 'hula hoop' of days gone by. The twisted 28 ga would probably have about
.5~1pf per inch and would be similar to the tuning capacitor found at the
end of some DDRR configurations. A well constructed DDRR had very good
performance for a short antenna. I used the configuration in a special
purpose multiband VHF antennas at work a few years back. In field tests
the were within a dB or so of a full size tuned 1/4 monopole - at ~1/6th the
height.

The fractal antenna 's (and their on-glass, invisible cousins) are another
antenna type to be considered in a comparative analysis of the 'lasso' !

This one I will try too !

Thanks
Niel

PS: got KX1 #159 last Thur, and the jr op should have it finished tomorrow
for my next trip. It is going to be great !! I only have one problem.
My 13yr old wont let me build anymore of my own elecraft kits. He did a
portion of my K2 (#96), did all the options as they showed up, and stoutly
defends his 'rights' to any of these kits.

Subject: [Elecraft] KX1: "lasso" antenna worked best

Bill,

I initially tried a true loop, but it didn't load as well as a "lasso"
(closed
loop with a single-wire tail running to the KX1's antenna jack). The room is
probably 14 x 15'. For a ground, I used a 12' piece of hookup wire, but I'm
thinking about trying the ground screw on a nearby AC outlet panel. (Do try
this
at home! But be careful....).
