I lived in Santa Monica as a youngster and operated HF from 1952-1957. 
There was a fair amount of powerline noise in those days resulting from
the salt-air deposits on insulators, etc (you could often walk by a
power pole and hear the crackle).  Southern California Edison would
occasionally come by with a water truck and pressure hose and clean
them off, however.

Strangely I don't hear that kind of noise here, although I am only ~400
ft. from the water at this QTH.  My aluminum vertical doesn't appear to
be corroding either.  Perhaps the much calmer waters of Puget Sound
result in less airborne salt than one gets near the exposed coastline.
I have yet to use the NB in my K2 however the noise reduction of the
KDSP2, which operates on a different sort of noise, is quite useful.
