I installed the subject modification the other day using one of the little
circuit boards from Tom, N0SS. The board fit perfectly and I installed it
exactly as he describes. The feature works perfectly, and is a great
addition to the K2.

I elected to go with a different LED option, which made it unnecessary to
drill out the larger area on the backside of the front panel to accommodate
the LED. I used a high-efficiency "dot point" LED from Digikey (part number
160-1084-ND) which has a unique physical design. The round portion of the
LED is only 1.8 mm in diameter and the lens extends out from a larger square
base that fits against the rear of the K2 panel. If you drill a 2 mm hole
in the panel, the LED easily slides into the hole when you refit the front
panel to the control board and the tip of the LED just barely sticks out of
the hole in the panel.

If you feel comfortable drilling out the larger hole as Tom describes,
you'll probably get a slightly more visible result at a wider angle than
with the diode I used. This smaller diode gives an acceptable result for me
at a viewing angle of around 45 degrees. If you don't like it, you can
always go back and drill out the rear of the panel to accommodate the larger
LED.

Thanks to Tom for a very good little PC board and excellent documentation to
go with it.
