I was wondering as well.... the ASA used to stand for the Army Security
Agency which did sigint (signals intelligence) during the cold war and
Vietnam. It was disbanded long ago.
CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) by it's charter does not perform
intelligence within the boarders of the USA (supposedly)... that's left to
the FBI and other agencies. NSA (National Security Agency) monitors
communication systems wire, wireless and computer... and breaks encryptions
and codes.... NRO (National Reconnaissance Office) controls spy satellites
and monitors earth from the eye in the sky. The DIA (Defense Intelligence
Agency) also has birds and dabbles in the collection of Intel from military
sources. There are other less known agencies as well.
