[Elecraft] KX1, the CIA, Spying

I have been a ham (now with K1 s/n 1689 :-)) for just one year now, but
I was an SWL for about 40 years prior to that. I am sure that many of
you have heard "numbers stations". These are high-power broadcasters
that just mechanically repeat data - typically 5 number groups in
English, Spanish or German. The common understanding is that numbers
stations provide one-way message traffic to spies or moles who use "one
time pads" for decoding. This method has been in use for decades - it
allows the spy to use an inconspicuous portable general coverage
receiver, available anywhere in the world to get messages. (see
http://www.spynumbers.com/) for more general information. Anyway, I was
surprised to hear numbers stations loudly broadcasting in CW! - near the
edge of ham bands no less. It is a strange world out there. 73 de Ken
