The ASA and NSA are the true undercover organizations in the American
espionage and "intelligence" system. The CIA are their very public
"brothers" who draw all the attention, leaving them to do their work out =

the public spotlight.=20

The closest I ever got to them was working for a civilian subcontractor =
who
sometimes designed equipment for them. The way we usually figured out =
that
we were doing work for ASA or NSA was that suddenly we'd have a project =
and
we couldn't figure out just WHO the customer was! The few times we did =
know
-- because there was a real "need to know" to do the work -- that fact =
was
itself classified.=20

When I was at college doing my marine radio officer's ticket in the UK =
we
used to get annual recruitment visits from GCHQ which is the UK =
monitoring
and electronics intelligence organisation. I think the US equivalent is =
the
NSA? They used to come and tell us that we'd have a wonderful career =
with
them but that they couldn't tell us what it would be until we'd joined. =
I
chose oil tankers instead :-)
