[Elecraft] Taking the K2 in theauto ...

Hi Mike,
For your K2 mobile power connection, I'd go direct from the battery
terminals to the rig and skip the cigarette lighter. This will minimize any
noise pickup and possible sources of oxidation that you'd have with a
cigarette lighter connection.
Be sure to put in-line fuses in BOTH battery leads as close to the battery
connection as possible. This will protect against opposite polarity shorts
to either lead. The fuses can be just about any amperage above what the K2
would draw.
Inside the cab I'd run the leads to an Anderson PowerPole or similar
connector secured under the dash edge or somewhere similar. I sure wouldn't
want to have a coaxial DC connector floating around that might make contact
with a grounded corner of something. Fuse the positive lead of the cable
that runs from your in-cab connector to the K2 with the Elecraft recommended
amperage fuse.
Be sure to physically secure the leads with wire tie wraps to prevent
chafing and make sure there's adequate protection where the leads pass
through the firewall. A convenient spot in most cars for passing wires
through the firewall is around the A/C drain pipe. You can recognize this
as a tube, usually near the center of the firewall, that comes through the
firewall and then points straight down.
73,
Bill...

For the list memebrs ... I'd like to wire up a connection to plug my K2 into
the Cigarette lighter in my car ... has anyone on this list done that and
were there any problems with noise?? What kind of antenna would be best on a
car set up?? I have an Isuzu Trooper and spend a lot of time in the
mountains and back roads of Montana, Washington and Idaho ...
