Just to follow up on Kixie's adventures on the
non-contest band last night: after working Panama, I
worked Galapagos, HC8/N1KO, got a not-very-meaningful
'5NN', but I was part of a simplex pile, so that was
nice.
Then I pulled the plug, and with the six internal
lithium batteries providing a bit over 9V, and power
out at about 1.5-2W, I worked VA3TY in Toronto,
getting a 539. We chatted for about ten minutes, then
I switched back to the 13.5V in, and about 4W out, for
another ten minutes of chat about the rig. I hadn't
been using the KXPD1 paddles, designed for the rig,
but at his request, I plugged them in, and used them
from then on. Very interesting design, they worked
with the merest touch, the way I like it, and it does,
indeed, seem as though they could actually be worked
with mittens on. Sent some intelligible code at 30
wpm, but mostly chatted at 25.
Finally, I exchanged some chat and FISTS numbers
with Dan, KN9X, in IL. I got a 449, him a 559.
One difference I've noticed with the KX1: its
internal "Dentist" vfo is steady as a rock! I'm used
to the K1, where I have to tune up a bit after each
over, to compensate for warmup drift. Not with Kixie!
She stays right smack dab where you put her.
I'm currently fighting the impulse to string a wire
out my office window.
