Well folks, I have taken a moment away from my new toy and put together
this report.
K2 #3776 is up and running. I started construction on 7 October 2003 and
completed assembly last Friday. I took my rig over to Bill Spauldings
QTH and we tuned it up using his HP3585B Spectrum Analyzer. Initially
the PLL would not lock up, troubleshooting proved that a cold solder
joint on the temperature compensated PCB at RP3 on the main board kept
any signal voltage from feeding U6, this in turn broke the signal path
for system clock in the PLL loop. I pulled the RP3 pcb out and
resoldered all the connections. Once that was done the K2 did its tuning
as designed.
The sensitivity of the receiver is great, power transmitter tune up
was as it was designed to be... clean and right on the numbers.
The KSB2 unit works well, the Audio Filter and time clock work fine,
and the K160RX is installed and works fine. I built the ATU but have a
problem with it. During tune it initially indicated 000 and at pin 1 of
U4 I had no voltage. Pulled out the ATU, resoldered the leads on T1 and
all points on the pcb ... reinstalled ATU, now get only HI in tune mode
with about 1.67 volts on the pin 1 of U4 ... tuning C5 seems to have no
effect on the reading on the LCD.
So, now to track down the culprit ... T1 is ok, all leads on the ATU
PCB are good ... correct parts in the proper places .... where to next?
Mean time, I need to stop playing with the thing and get the ATU fixed ....
My sincerest appreciation to Bill Spaulding for all his many hours of
help, wisdom and encouragement in building this rig, for all you guys on
this list and to Elecraft for making such a wonderful product.....
