[Elecraft] K2 20 Meter problems.

James,

The best suggestion that I can muster is to look carefully (again, and
again, and again) for an unsoldered connection. Also look carefully for a
poorly tinned toroid lead. These things can make a connection initially,
but go awry after some period of time. I have even found some commercially
manufactured equipment that has had an unsoldered connection (but not the
more recent wave soldered boards), so don't feel too bad if you do find one.

Where to look? -- Most likely candidates are the low pass filter section and
the bandpass filter section. Take the schematic and follow the signal paths
for 20 meters (since the other bands behave normally) and you should find
it. Also since I surmised from your note that it worked at one time, I
would expect the component values to be correct, but there is no harm in
re-checking those too.

Last (or maybe first try), twist the capacitors for 20 meters in the
bandpass filter several turns and then re-do the 20 meter bandpass filter
alignment - the capacitors seem to have some problem that goes away from
turning them several turns - it just may be that yours did not display this
problem initially, but has suffered from some kind of residual effects - it
is a long shot, but certainly easy enough to check out.

| I have a K2 that recently developed a strange problem on 20 Meters. Lately
it seems on 20 meters only I do not get any power out (well, maybe a watt at
the most, despite the power being set to 5). I tested this against a watt
meter. Also, the receive seems to be way down on 20 meters compared to
another radio on the bench. The SWR is fine, and I even tested it on 2
different antennas (1 wire, and one verticle). All the other bands have
normal power output and receive normally. I'm guessing maybe something went
out of adjustment?? Many thanks!
