I just completed the 2.5KHz mod, and am very pleased with the results. 
The receive audio is more natural with the wider bandwidth, and from 
what I can hear while monitoring my signal on the 746PRO while 
transmitting into a dummy load, the transmit quality is better as well.

I'm still experimenting with microphones however. I consistently get 
unsolicited favorable comments about the Heil HC5 element when I use it 
on the ICOM 746PRO, but when I use it on the K2, it sounds awful, and 
others have told me that the audio sounds 'slightly' distorted; I've 
heard it, and they're being kind. I know others have reported success 
with the Heil HC5 or HC4 element, but I can't report the same.

On the other hand, I bought that cheap headset that Radio Shack had on 
sale for $2.99 a few months ago, and the microphone from that sounds 
quite good. When I've asked for critical audio reports using that 
combination, the comments have always been favorable. I've considered 
purchasing the Heil/Elecraft hand mic., but I don't want a hand 
microphone for home use, so the search continues to find a 
decent-sounding desk microphone for use with the K2. I have to admit 
though, the search is not all that intense, since I operate about 99% cw 
anyway.  :-)

In summation, I don't think you'll regret doing the 2.5KHz mod George.
